Tuesday morning in Arcata, environmental scientist for The California Department of Fish and Game, Dave Lancaster, removes a 50lb. black bear cub after it was discovered wandering along the north side of 7th Street, near the Highway 101 over crossing. Due to the bear cub’s location near busy city streets and Highway 101 the decision was made to try and capture it and move it to a safe location. Dave Lancaster was able to successfully tranquilize the bear cub as it came out of the underbrush it was hiding in and remove the cub from danger. The bear cub was taken to the Eureka Department of Fish and Game facility and examined by Rick Brown, from Humboldt State University’s Wildlife Management Department, who determined the 50 lb. black bear cub looked healthy and could be released back into the wild. By 3:00, Lancaster was releasing the black bear cub out in an undisclosed location. Over the past month, several bear cub sightings have been reported to the Arcata Police Department and an email sent to the Eureka Reporter by Eureka residents, Frank and Elsie Mendes, who recently photographed a cub in the backyard of their home on Old Stump Lane chewing up their bird feeders appears to be a different bear. According to the City of ArcataÕs press release, bears can be common wildlife visitors in some Arcata neighborhoods. Most of these visits are because the bears are in search of food. People who live in areas with a potential for bears are encouraged to not leave pet food outdoors and to secure trash containers. Most bears in our area will run away when they encounter a human. Making noise and trying to look as big as possible will help scare a bear. If a bear cub is encountered, it should be left alone. Also, leave the area because the cubÕs mother will most likely be near by and may interpret human presence as a threat to the cub. The black bear cub just released is believed to have either been abandoned by its mother, or the mother is deceased. With out the knowledge
